Inner Wisdom #01: The Books That Lit The Spark
Mar 16, 2026Finding Alignment with Your Companions on the Road
I used to believe leadership required a full armory, a mask of certainty that never cracked. I measured my success by my ability to absorb every blow without flinching... until the armor became too heavy to carry. It wasn't until I stopped looking outward for solutions and started seeking inward wisdom that the path finally opened up. The deepest truths we seek are often already written, waiting for us to be ready to read them.
What if the most important meeting you could take all week is the one you have with a book?
The corporate world encourages us to run fast, to always look for the next tactical edge. But the real game changer isn't speed, it's stillness. It's the intentional act of stopping and absorbing the distilled wisdom of those who have walked a courageous path before us. For me, that meant turning to a few key "Companions on the Road" who illuminated the gap between who I thought I needed to be and who I really needed to become to live and lead truthfully.
The first beacon - Brené Brown
Brené Brown... Her work on shame and vulnerability shattered my old paradigm. I realized my exhaustion wasn't from the work itself, but from maintaining the facade of perfection. Dare to Lead™ became a blueprint for removing the armor, showing me that vulnerability is not weakness... it is, in fact, the clearest measure of courage. She reminded me that we are here to walk through the wilderness, not around it.

My Brené's personal favorites
- Dare to Lead
- Braving the Wilderness
- Atlas of the Heart
- Strong Ground
The second beacon - Adam Grant
Then came the clarity of Adam Grant. He challenged my need to be "right". His perspective on thinking and leadership is a powerful invitation to humility. True strength doesn't come from rigid certainty, but from the willingness to change your mind, to constantly question your own expertise, and to look for flaws in your own blueprint. It is the steady work of being a lifelong student.

My Adam's personal favorites
- Think Again
- Hidden Potential
The third beacon - Ancient Philosophy
And finally, the gentle grounding of Ken Mogi and the path of Ikigai. This wisdom showed me that professional success divorced from personal purpose is just noise. Alignment isn't a complex equation; it is the simple, daily practice of finding your reason for being. It is the steady light that guides you when the external accolades fade.

These books didn't give me a checklist. They gave me a mirror. They helped me carve away the excess of ego and performance to find the essential structure beneath... the core truth that "Who we are is how we lead". I invite you to take a pause this week and find your own companions on the road.
