The Space Between: Your Only True Power

alignment Apr 06, 2026

We often feel life is happening to us, not for us.

There is a moment we all know, one that arrives uninvited, where the email hits, the deadline shifts, or the conversation turns unexpectedly sharp. In that split second, the world shrinks to a single pulse of adrenaline... and we react. This is the place I used to live, running on the exhaust fumes of other people's urgency. It was a dizzying, reactive path, and it left me exhausted.

If we want to lead from a place of true alignment, we must find the ground beneath our own feet. We have to learn to halt the impulsive reaction and step into the quiet pause. The Stoics understood this well, recognizing that external events are indifferent, but our judgement, our reaction, is everything.

Viktor Frankl gave us the profound truth: "Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom."

This space is not a philosophical abstract. It is the architectural foundation of a well-led life.

Here is how we cultivate that quiet, powerful space:

I. Build the Physical Anchor (The Breath)

Before you rush to keyboard or confrontation, stop. Use a simple technique, like square breathing (in for four, hold for four, out for four, hold for four). This is not just a calming exercise; it is an act of sovereign leadership over your own nervous system. You are physically widening the space, giving yourself permission to choose clarity over chaos.

II. Apply the Stoic Filter (The Judgement)

Once the physical calm settles, look at the stimulus with detached honesty. Ask yourself: "Is this within my control, or is it external?"

If it is external, release the need to control the outcome. If it is internal (your attitude, your effort, your response), then apply your values. This filter prevents you from trading your peace for pointless anxiety.

III. Choose the Aligned Footstep (The Path)

When you consistently create this space, your response ceases to be a reaction and becomes an intentional step on your path. It is the moment you choose the humble response over the ego-driven one. It is ensuring your external action matches your internal truth. It is in this commitment that genuine serenity, not just success, starts to ensue.

As Viktor Frankl said, “Don't aim at success... For success... must ensue... as the unintended side effect of one's personal dedication to a cause greater than oneself.”

When we lead from this place, we are no longer running from shadow to shadow. We are walking with purpose, grounded by our breath and guided by our integrity. This is the definition of true alignment.
